The Most Creative Textures In The World

We’ve been using 2 Lil Owls textures in our own work for over a year now. They’re hands down our favorite textures of all time. Keep reading to find out why, and see how 2 Lil Owls’ biggest ever texture bundle can help your creative work. You don’t want to miss this one!

Textures Created For Designers Like You

Usually we’ll always avoid calling a product ‘the best’, as we realize how many fantastic products are out there. However, in 2 Lil Owls’ case they really do set the bar when it comes to texture design.

Rather than supplying basic close-up photos, each of their textures is hand-crafted as an individual work of art. Each texture combines expert photography with the artistic direction, care and attention of designer Denise Love. Denise spends a huge amount of time ensuring each texture is perfect, and will often layer up multiple photos, brushes, scans, effects, colors and masks to create a superb end product.

The result? Textures that are rich with depth and detail. Textures that do the hard work for you. You won’t need to tweak and manipulate these textures to make your work look great. You can just drop them into your projects and take your designs to a whole new level. Take a look at how beautiful they are, and see why we love using them so much in our own work!

Carnevale Texture Pack (45 Textures):

Hand-Crafted, Beautiful Detail In Every Texture

You can tell the love and care that’s been put into each one of Denise’s textures. She ensures that each texture is a work of art, rich in detail and design. Each texture is over 3500px wide, making them perfect for your print work. Take a look at how great they look at higher res:

One of the best things about 2 Lil Owls textures is how versatile they are. This bundle gives you such a huge array of textures, that you’ll constantly be finding creative uses for them within your design work.

Will you convert your regular photos into an authentic vintage outcome? Will you apply subtle scratches, noise and markings to your Photoshop work? Will you easily apply a tattered edge/border effect for your images? Will you apply stunning lighting effects and color bursts to enhance your graphic design work? Will you establish a beautiful painted style background as the basis for your composition?

There is a reason why we’ve been using 2 Lil Owls textures in our own work for over 12 months, and are still finding new uses for them in every project.

Authentic Surface Textures for Authentic Designers

The difference between an average designer and a great designer often comes down to attention to detail. So many textures are created within Photoshop, and result in a boring, lifeless outcome. Denise has sourced her textures from authentic, truly interesting surfaces. From old Victorian manuscripts, to tattered film transfers, this texture library will breathe new life and authenticity into your design work.

For the designer who cares about attention to detail, these textures are a gold mine.

Apply Your Textures to Multiple Photos Using Photoshop Actions

We’re all agreed that textures can add depth and beauty to our photography and design work. However, what if you want to apply them to multiple photos, or even an entire photo album?

Luckily, using Photoshop we can apply textures to as many photos as we want in seconds, by using Photoshop Actions and Batch Production.

This isn’t as intimidating as it sounds, and I’ll walk you through the basic steps needed to achieve multiple texture application.

We’ll be using one of the incredible textures from this week’s deal:

2 Lil Owls Extensive Texture Bundle (270 Textures) – 93% Off

Let’s get started!

Treasure Map Tutorial Tutorial

Step 1:

If you’ve grabbed the 2 Lil Owls texture bundle, then you can open it up, and select a suitable texture.

I’m using the Carnevale 2 texture, from the Carnevale Fine Art textures pack.

Here’s a look at the texture we’ve just opened:

Step 2:

With your texture document open, go to edit>define pattern.

Name your pattern and click ‘OK’.

Step 3:

Locate a folder containing the photos that you want to apply your texture to.

In this case, I downloaded the following images of flowers and placed them in a folder, containing only these images:

Dandelion Flower

Pink Flowers

Orange Flowers + Butterfly

Open up the first photo within Photoshop.

Step 4:

Time to start creating our action.

Go to windows > actions.

When the actions panel pops up, click on the icon to ‘create new action’.

Name your action something relevant. I went with ‘flowers-texture’ and then hit ‘record’.

Step 5:

With your action now recording, go to your layers palette and click on the icon for ‘create new fill or adjustment layer’.

Select ‘pattern’ from the list of adjustment layer options:

When the patterns box pops up, your newly created pattern should be active automatically.

Adjust the scale if necessary. I shifted my scale to 36 to fit the canvas better. Click ‘ok’ to apply the pattern layer.

To make the effect work best, you should ensure that the photos in your photo album are all similar size.

Step 6:

On your pattern layer, select the layer blend mode to ‘overlay’.

Then reduce the opacity of this texture layer until you’re happy with the result. I reduced it to 60%.

Here’s the result of the texture application:

Step 7:

With your action still running, go to image > save as and save the image within your original photo album folder. It will most likely save as a ‘copy’ of the original, rather than trying to over-write it. This is fine, as you will retain the original photo.

Once you have saved your textured version of the photo, return to your actions panel and click the ‘stop’ icon, to complete your action.

Step 8:

Now we want to apply our new action to our entire photo album. To do this, we will use Batch Production, a really handy feature of Photoshop for applying actions to multiple images.

Start by going to file>automate>batch.

Your action should automatically be selected next to ‘action:’ as it was the last one created. If not, you can easily select it using the drop down list.

Under ‘folder’ select ‘choose’ and select the photo album which you want to apply your texture to.

Step 9:

After clicking ‘OK’ on your batch, you should see the photos in your album open automatically, one by one within Photoshop. You can sit back and watch the textures be automatically applied over each texture and then resaved within your photo album folder. Genius!

Here’s a look at our final textured photos:

Bonus Tip:

Well done on making it this far! You now know how to apply textures to multiple photos and entire photo albums.

If you want you can take this method a step further. Experiment with adding further textures whilst your action is recording. Tweak saturation, levels and other variables. You can make your actions as complex as you want, and achieve some really amazing results!

You can view your final outcome below. We hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and would love to hear your feedback on the techniques and outcome.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, be sure to take a look at this week’s deal. The texture you have just worked with is a tiny part of the huge texture bundle we’re currently running. How to Use Textures to Make Your Photos Look Authentically Vintage

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to use textures to build up an authentic vintage outcome. You’ll learn how to correctly manipulate and blend textures to achieve the best effect, as well as learning how effective it can be to layer up multiple textures and layers for a more unique outcome.

Let’s get started!

Follow along with this tutorial: Download the freebie + source file

This tutorial is accompanied by a fantastic freebie pack, taken from this week’s deal, offering you 270 of 2 Lil Owls best textures for just $20.

To give you a sample of the 270 textures on offer, we’re giving away 5 beautiful masked textures. Enter your email below to download the free texture pack, as well as the Photoshop source file for this tutorial, so you can follow along easily.

Step 1:

Start by downloading this image of two elderly musicians playing together.

Open it up in Photoshop. Resize the image to 1000px width.

Elderly Musicians

This will be our base photo.

Step 2:

Apply a black/white adjustment layer to desaturate your photo in a non-destructive way.

Create a photo filter adjustment layer, and apply Warming Filter 81. Use the following settings:

Photo Filter Adjustment Layer Settings:

Filter: Warming filter (81)
Density: 60%
Preserve Luminosity: Yes
Layer Opacity: 100%

Step 3:

Download the free texture pack available at the top of this page. This includes 5 beautiful 2 Lil Owls textures, not available for free anywhere else.

You will need these textures to follow along with the rest of this tutorial.

Download the free texture: Creative Masks 2 Set – Texture 3.

Paste it into your canvas and resize it to fit.

Now change this texture layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’. This will hide the black parts of this layer, just letting the lighter details show up. This will naturally lighten your image, but will give a lovely effect of the markings, scratches and creases enhancing your image, giving it a vintage appearance.

Step 4:

Return to your free texture pack (again, you can access this at the top of this page).

Select the beautiful texture Creative Masks 2 Set – Texture 8.

Paste it into your canvas, and resize it accordingly:

Again, set this texture layer’s blend mode to ‘screen’. This will hide the black parts of the logo, but still show the lovely vintage detailing.

TOP TIP: When working with 2 Lil Owls textures it’s really effective to layer up multiple textures to build up your desired outcome.

Step 5:

Repeat the same texture used in steps 3 and 4, to apply Creative Masks 2 Set – Texture 20 from your free texture pack:

Step 6:

By applying the screened textures the image is looking more vintage and damaged, but it’s also looking too light.

To fix this, apply an exposure adjustment layer, using the setting below:

Exposure Adjustment Layer Settings:

Exposure: -0.87
Offset: +0.0759
Gamma Correction: 0.66

You can see that these exposure settings taken a lot of the brighten out of the image, which is appropriate as we’re trying to achieve a more vintage effect.

Now apply a levels adjustment layer using the settings below:

Levels Adjustment Layer Settings:

11 / 0.85 / 255

This will help to darken your image and enhance the weathered, vintage look:

Step 7:

Time to add some more lovely textures to our image, to build up the vintage effect even further.

Access your free textures pack (taken from the top of this page).

Paste the Creative Masks Set 2 – Texture 29 into your canvas and resize accordingly:

Rather than setting this layer to ‘screen’ mode, we’re going to try a different effect.

Change the layer blend mode to ‘hard light’ and reduce it’s opacity to 13%.

Step 8:

To apply a final vintage touch, we’re going open the final texture from today’s freebie pack.

This texture is taken from the awesome Transfers pack, available as part of our current 2 Lil Owls Texture deal.

Paste the Transfer Texture Collection – Texture 1 into your canvas:

Change this layer’s blend mode to ‘soft light’ and reduce it’s opacity to 50%:

Step 9:

Congratulations! You’ve just achieved a really authentic looking vintage effect.

Now…. what if you want to apply this vintage effect to more than one photo?

Well, because all of the techniques in this tutorial have been non-destructive, it’s actually incredibly easy.

In the image below you can see the layer arrangement. I really advise downloading the freebies from the top/bottom of this page, as we’ve included the Photoshop source file for this tutorial. This is a really easy way to follow along and edit some of the effects yourself.

In your layer order you can see ‘Photo 1′ selected. To apply the same vintage effect to alternate photos all you need to do is paste them into your canvas and ensure that the new layer is positioned beneath all of your adjustment/texture layers.

You can see in the image below where layers ‘Photo 2′ and ‘Photo 3′ are positioned:

Step 10:

I was apply to apply the same vintage effect to these additional photos in 5 seconds flat.

Garden Flowers Photo

Cute Kitten Photo

I really hope that you enjoyed this short tutorial. This vintage effect can be applied to almost any photo, and is really versatile. Have fun with it, and enjoy your freebies pack.

I love all these textures and really would like to buy them. However, I need you to confirm:
If I use them in a picture book (possibly as they are or tweaked) does this count as commercial use? The books will be sold.
Thanks and look forward to your reply.

    • Tom Ross says:

Great question Genny. I’ve emailed Denise from 2 Lil Owls about this, as she’ll be able to give a better answer than I can. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back.

  3. Ben Brush says:

This is seriously the nicest bundle of textures I’ve seen anywhere.

    Nice one guys!

    • Tom Ross says:

Thanks Ben! We put a lot of thought into this bundle, and Denise’s textures are absolutely beautiful.

Hopefully you’re still able to write an awesome tutorial for the community to enjoy. (Emailing you about this now).

  4. Chris Ford says:

Wow! These are fantastic – excellent quality and perfect to take images to another level – I can’t wait to get using them!

  5. Ann Farr says:

Wow! What a fantastic bundle of beautiful textures. Has to be the best ever — and the price? Unbelievably ‘reasonable’ although I’d rather say ‘generous’. Thank you guys, really. Love them to bits.

    • Tom Ross says:

Thanks Ann, we’re so glad you’re enjoying your textures. We worked hard to put together this texture bundle for our Design Cutters. Your comment made our day though :).

I have just recently learned how to use textures in photos. I’m so excited to get started with these textures. And I’m sure the e-book will be a big help too! Thanks for the bargain!

    • Tom Ross says:

You’re very welcome Jeannine, thanks for commenting. Textures are excellent for adding extra depth and detail to your photography work, so I’m sure you’ll get plenty of use from them. The e-book is a fantastic guide to get your started, and it was very generous of Denise from 2 Lil Owls to let us include it as a free bonus. We’ll be posting our own tutorials next week giving you even more ideas for how to use your new textures.

  7. Donna Wilkins says:

I have tried several times to download the 270 textures but I get the message that “the source file cannot be found” and I cannot download them.

    Please help.

    • Tom Ross says:

Hi Donna, thanks for commenting and letting us know. I’ve emailed you about this, and you should get your textures in no time. The issue may have been the large file download size, but we’re able to split this into pieces for you to help.

  8. Erica says:

These are great textures and terrific price. The 300dpi is great, but most of my pics are about 5100 px and enlarging these might cause too much distortion. What’s your opinion? Thanks

    • Tom Ross says:

Hi Erica, thanks for the great question. I too work at very high res, and honestly these textures do the job great. They’re so sharp that resizing by about 40% should still give you a fantastic looking outcome. The bonus workbook also gives you some great sharpening tips, if you want your textures looking extra sharp.

    • Scott Allan says:
      Excellent - 5 starsExcellent - 5 starsExcellent - 5 starsExcellent - 5 starsExcellent - 5 stars

Erica, if you’re using photoshop, I believe by opening your photo as a smart object you’ll be able to resize the texture(s) as large as needed without any quality loss at all. I’m just slightly above a newbie so I hope that makes sense and I worded it right, lol…

      • Tom Ross says:

Hey Scott, thanks for commenting. Unfortunately smart objects only keep an image sharp as you continually manipulate it and resize it up and down within the bounds of the original image. So for example, you could never resize a 16X16px icon to 1600X1600px, it just can’t work. Making an image larger will always see a degree of quality loss, and even smart objects can’t avoid this.

This deal is absolutely well! By the way, excuse me ,could you please tell me how can I upload my photos?

    • Tom Ross says:

Thanks for the question. I’m dropping you an email to clarify which photo uploading you’re referring to. Hopefully you mean uploading your work to share it with us :).

  10. Genny says:

Just bought this bundle and it’s amazing. I’ve been looking for textures like these for a long time. There’s loads of choice to play around with. The tutorial that comes with the package is really easy to follow (I’m not tech savvy), the download was quick and easy. Everything ran smoothly. Thanks to Design Cuts for letting me know about this and thanks to 2 Lil Owls!

    • Tom Ross says:

Thanks for the awesome feedback Genny, they really are one of a kind aren’t they! We can’t wait to see what you start creating using your new textures. Please do feel to share and we’ll hopefully feature your work as a community creation.

  11. Matt Slightam says:

In regards to enlargement I can recommend Genuine Fractals – which is now called Perfect Resize – by onOne Software, it’s fantastic for scaling up whilst keeping as much quality as possible by using fractal-based interpolation algorithms (designer/tech geek out over) :) .. Noise Ninja is also well worth looking at to reduce noise and distortion (ok … so not quite over :D)

  12. Robert Johnston says:

Just purchased these using my PayPal address, now I see the message about noncommercial use. Did not see anything about, that in the information about the Deal. Am 83, and wanted to use it textures with a few images that I sell. But there was no answer to the person, who asked.

    Bob Johnston

  13. Robert Johnston says:

Just saw in the small print, it is the original textures which can not be sold, so that’s OK, with me. Never would have thought about selling them anyway. ;)

    • Tom Ross says:

Yup, these textures are perfect for commercial usage, but just not resale. I’m glad you were able to grab them at such a huge discount, and we’d love to see what you’re able to create using them. Thanks for commenting Bob :).

  14. Dalinda says:

I’ve been using Denise’s textures for a couple of years now, and I love how they take each picture up a notch! This is a great deal, and even though I already have some of these, I’ll be purchasing this set too! Thanks for the great offer! Who doesn’t like a deal!?!

    • Tom Ross says:

I’ve also used them for over a year now, and they really are the best I’ve worked with. Even just dropping in a texture in 10 seconds seems to elevate your work. I’m so glad you enjoyed this deal and thanks for taking the time to comment :).

I have tons of textures that I’ve collected here and there, some freebies, some paid, and I can swear on my life by this… Denise’s are without a doubt some of the best out there and, more importantly, most useful I have. I think I already have two or three of ‘these’ sets (as well as many others of hers) and this is still a smoking deal. Thanks as always to Denise for her awesome work and specials (get on her mailing list if you’re not yet), and also to DesignCuts for putting this together!!!
Looking for to more amazing deals ;)

HUGE fan of 2 Lil Owls. Obtained a smaller package a few months ago. Seen other packages and the tutorial for far, far more, esp on her site. Thank goodness I’m on her email list. I almost fell over when offer came yesterday.

Large photos: these are huge and incredibly detailed. You don’t need 300 dpi at 100% to see the effect. These aren’t tiny screen images. They work fine sized up. I often clone textured areas and fine-tune images.

I am totes addicted to textures. In my earlier life, I wove, embroidered, painted, drew, etc in traditional arts and crafts. Degreed and my work often exhibited. I am drawn to these like a moth to the flame.

Plus I am ramping up my web designs for clients. I only need a bit of something here and there. I use them for backgrounds for headers, Facebook covers, and other online areas. Plus I just love playing with these and my photos. I change the colors in overlay mode and by blending layers. I have fun. And for $20, whatta deal!

Finally, glad I found you but sad I missed previous offers, whatever they were. You have great taste and prices. Thank you!

    • Tom Ross says:

Thanks for commenting Jenny, I’m a huge fan of Denise’s work too :). I agree, these textures work great at high resolutions. Textures seem to be a staple for a lot of designers, and they’re definitely my most used design resource. I’m going to email you, as I’d love it if you could send over some of your designs.

HI, wanting to say a big ‘Thank you’ for letting us know about 2 Lil Owls.

I so love textures, and knowing they are OK to use commercially is a great bonus.

    You guys are great…

  21. Nicole Nelson says:

Just came across this awesome offer and would love to get it!
Don’t work so much with texture yet and would love to start this. But I also sell my images, I would not resale the texture itself, but if would be on my images, is that allowed to sell than?

Thank you for your fast answer!

    • Tom Ross says:

Hey Nicole, I’m emailing you about this. Hopefully the usage should be fine, but it’s always a good idea to double check. :)

  22. Wow, what a deal! I was blown away by your beautiful textures, Denise. I just finished reading the e-book that’s included in the deal and I’m very impressed. Although I’ve been using textures for years, there were a few tips I picked up from reading your book. The instructions are extremely clear and well-written and the photographs you’ve added to illustrate the steps really make the book not only crystal clear, but visually gorgeous and inspiring too. Thank you so much! My head is swimming with ideas now…

    • Tom Ross says:

Thanks so much for leaving such great feedback Peggy. We agree, the workbook is a fantastic extra, and gave us some awesome ideas for using the textures too. We can’t wait to see what you’re creating using your new vectors. We’d really like to feature your work as a community creation here if possible.

      • Thanks, Tom! And thanks so much for introducing me to Denise’s work. She’s a regular treasure trove of inspiration.

I’m also happy that I’ve been introduced to Design Cuts and I’m looking forward to following you in the future.

I was like a little child on Christmas day and couldn’t wait to discover what I had purchased! What a bargain! What a deal! Denise I absolutely love your tutorials and I couldn’t wait to get stuck into designing using your textures. Not only are these textures great for photographs they are also great to use to get that ‘right’ look in your designs. :)

    • Tom Ross says:

Aw, thanks Rosa, your comment made my day :). Consider this an early Christmas present to yourself. We hope you’ll share any work you create with your new textures, and hopefully we can share it as a community creation to get you some good exposure.

Does this bundle include all of the textures posted here at the 2 lil Owls’ Pinterest page ?

Very much interested if everything is included.

    • Tom Ross says:

Hi Faisal. No, the deal doesn’t include all of Denise’s textures, but it does include 270 of her best (plus the texture workbook). The deal page here gives full previews of every single texture included, so you can see exactly what you’re buying.

I paid for the offer. Was there supposed to be a download link or an email sent to download the offer? So far nothing and it’s been a while. Does it take a long time to get? Thanks

    • Tom Ross says:

Hey Deborah, great to resolve this with you earlier. I hope that you really enjoy your new textures, they’re certainly good for giving you a creative spark.

This is an amazing deal! As an aspiring graphic designer, I am really excited to start using these in my projects. They’re so beautiful, and you really can see all the detail that is put into every single texture. Unbeatable deal. Breathtaking beauty. Thank you so much for providing this to designers and artists everywhere!

    • Tom Ross says:

Thanks so much for the feedback Kathryn. We hope that you’ll love using your new textures. Please do let us know what you create with them :).

Got in at the last minute, but I too am impressed. I know when I need a texture, but I also know I am not good at making them. These are just the kinds of textures I had in mind.

    An excellent value. Thanks!

  33. Don Baker says:

Can I use this without photoshop.

    • Tina Muller says:

You should be able to, Don. All 2 Lil Owls textures are in jpg format, which means you can use them in pretty much any design program available.
