As always, a great episode and I continue to deeply appreciate the myriad of topics that you guys cover with the show. This episode had me wondering if there was another type of “camp” to be added to the list in Tom’s offering of the opportunity missed. When I first heard Tom’s story I was thinking, maybe people (his network) just didn’t “like” this influencer and simply didn’t share his enthusiasm for this person? I doubt that you guys would be pushing for people to follow up on opportunities that simply don’t align with their personal perspectives. But I think too that sometimes we can be a bit overly analytical and this might paralyze us when such opportunities present themselves. Although Tom didn’t share the details here, maybe there were deeper questions about where the job was located… whether the work was remote… whether someone was willing to uproot their current situation amidst this current world environment? Occasionally I think we can be a bit too creative for our own good. I think designers have a tendency to approach situations with their typical creative solution bent and it can paralyze them to the point where they cannot take action or the opportunity simply expires.
As well, I was excited to hear Dustin challenging the old adage of insanity (typical high-level creative thinker, always questioning), but caution him that his comparative of writing is not entirely accurate. Writing the SAME page over and over again and hoping that multiple versions of that same page will somehow mutate into a book… is more in line with what this saying is suggesting.
