For the benefit of others: Open the provided PSD file (Engraving and Halftone.psd). Double-click the Smart Object layer (Your Image). Paste your subject matter to be halftone / engraved into that smart object and save / close. Now, (back in the provided PSD) select the smart object layer and use the provided actions. This solved the Threshold or Selection errors I was getting when trying to use the actions in other PSD documents.
