Piddix

Vintage Envelopes

Authentic, vintage envelopes from 1891 through the 1960s, scanned at high resolution and meticulously restored.

All from the personal Piddix archive, I selected envelope fronts and backs with especially great graphics: airplane stamps, detailed postage cancellations, vintage airmail stickers and lovely handwriting.

Every aspect of the ephemera including stamps and graphics has been cleared for copyright.

Retro People Illustrations

Authentic, mid-century illustrations in colour can be especially difficult to find for commercial use, in large part due to the layers and layers of copyright research that must be performed. At Piddix I work with a team of copyright and intellectual property lawyers to ensure that every Piddix image is safe to use in all kinds of personal and commercial design projects. These mid-century illustrations of people are from both the personal piddix archive as well as several archives I’ve traveled to in two different states. I’ve scanned them at 800 ppi, restored the often-dirty and marked originals, and isolated them on a nice, bright white background. A great, expressive collection of people from the 1950s to early 1960s.

100 Art Nouveau French Engravings (French Frames; Party; Garden; Sports; Steampunk)

The Piddix archival collection is especially strong in French imagery, and over the years I’ve collected nearly 5000 French illustrations and typographical examples originally from menus, theatre programs, advertisements, newspapers, perfume labels, sweets wrappers and woodcut engravings, mostly from the Art Nouveau period (1890s-1910s). I’ve selected 100 of my absolute favorites, scanned and restored them at very high resolution, researched copyright, and then arranged them into five sets:

Mid-Century Paper Pack

These detailed, mid-century papers have an especially fun story. Every year I purchase and/or research hundreds of books, looking for especially great vintage imagery. I’m often the first person to crack the spine of these volumes in at least 50 years, and all the papers in this collection are ones I’ve found shoved between book pages, left to become brittle and discolor for decades. Includes vintage ledger pages, lined paper and a yellowed page divider.

1700s Paper Pack

I traveled 1500 miles to scan these incredibly rare papers from the 1700s in an agricultural archive. They’re from the very first edition of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine (1787), and not only do the pages have really great foxing and coloration, but you can also see the original botanical text showing through to varying degrees.

Mid-Century Office Ephemera

While some people go to estate sales to buy desks and other furniture, I go looking for what’s in the desks: long-forgotten receipts, calendars from 60 years before, cancelled checks and other bits of lost ephemera. This collection of mid-century paper is comprised of both estate sale finds (like the awesome and apparently misspelled hamburger receipt for 26 cents) as well as personal family treasures: a lovely manila tag found in the back of grandma’s record console, a small notepad from my Dad’s days working as a surveyor. All scanned, cleaned up, researched for copyright, and saved as very high resolution JPGs.

Iconic Mid-Century Engravings

These awesome engravings come from a somewhat odd source. In the 1940s, M&M Whiskey ran an ad campaign featuring engravings from various artists of objects that started with the letter “M.” I’ve collected 16 of these engravings so far, all of which are of an usually high quality (considering the source) and quite iconic. Each image is saved with both its original, retro-orange background as well as isolated as clear PNGs.

First Aid and Anatomy Engravings

From an incredibly rare medical textbook that had a famous moment when featured on the TV show “House,” this set of 1880s engravings features both illustrations of first-aid techniques as well as anatomical specimens (such as the “well developed muscle” and skull).

Hand-Colored Bird Egg Prints

My favorite part about these engravings of bird eggs from 1890 (aside from how beautiful they are) is that the illustrator’s wife hand-colored every single print. I’ve always pictured her grumbling under her breath while adding a bit of blue watercolor to her 1000th egg.

Victorian Scrapbook

The cover of this Victorian scrapbook is probably one of my single favourite pieces of ephemera in the entire Piddix archive. It was given to me by a local Piddix customers years ago, and I’ve selected 37 of the best lithographs from inside as well as 7 detailed card backs to include along with the cover. I spent hours meticulously restoring especially the faces of the girls and boys in the trade cards (since Victorian faces can end up looking very strange and red after 100+ years) as well as cleaning up any ugly and dirty parts, but also left plenty of the more beautiful tears and marks that show its vintage nature.

Vintage Torn Pages

For a recent design assignment I wanted a more authentic collaged background than I can sometimes fake in Photoshop, so grabbed a particularly fun 1800s book off my shelf and (gasp) torn up a bunch of the pages and engravings before scanning and isolating them in photoshop. The result is incredibly fun to layer in all kinds of ways.

Architectural Ornaments

From an 1890s textbook, these swoops, swirls, florals and line engravings were created by an Architectural Professor as examples for his students for how to draw ornaments from buildings. With the beautiful, vintage lines they are especially great for layering and collages.

1940s Type Posters

These posters were part of a salesmen’s kit for “Type Faces for Printers” from 1941. They’re great as-is (I want to frame a whole wall of them), and the text examples are fun to read for hidden jokes and gems. But additionally, I’ve researched every single one of these typefaces and they can be legally used to create your own fonts since both copyright and patent laws no longer apply to them. Please note that some of the original names of the fonts have been more recently trademarked, so it may be easiest to rename or alter the name of the original type if you do decide to use them as a basis for your own designs.

1800s Paper Pack

This huge paper pack from the 1800s has quickly become my go-to any time I need a good background to start a new design. For the past seven years, any time I’ve visited an archive and found a particularly lovely vintage piece of paper, I’ve make sure to scan it in very high resolution. For this set I selected 40 of my favorite neutral-colored pages. They’re highly detailed, showing textures, light marks and folds, and the occasional text showing through from the other side.

French Paper Pack

I just love using music as part of my background or as brush work on papers and layouts! I extracted these from a stash of vintage music sheets I got at an estate sale and I love the way they turned out!; Try adding layer styles or a soft bevel to add some texture! Also try the various blending modes and opacity settings! Very cool!

Vintage Writing 2 Brushes

Vintage Writing 1 has been retired, but oh what a find I have for you! These are just wonderful samples/fragments of old handwriting, which I have meticulously extracted to give you the best quality possible! Some are a little grungy. Some are post cards, some from letters, and others from handwritten books. Some are from the late 1800s and some a bit later. Some are ornate and some just everyday writing, some are not in English, but I am totally, 100% charmed by all of them! Use them to add texture and interest to your projects – they add such a feel of intimacy! Can you tell I have a passion for all things vintage?

I just have to share with you the text of one of the items included:

Rolled ink textures volume 01

These rolled ink textures were born from a desire to have a set of ink textures at hand. The textures have been created with black ink and rolls (one foam roll, and one rubber roll).

The type of effects obtained ranges from subtle noise to heavy smudges, and can have a variety of applications: noise pattern, background colour, ink wash, rough borders, and more.

The textures have been scanned in very high resolution (5000 x 7800 pixels on average) @ 800 dpi or more.

Leather billfold texture pack

These worn leather textures have been extracted from two leather billfolds that my wife and I own. They’re pretty big (an average of 4553×5975 pixels), and have been scanned at either 1200 or 2400 dpi.

There are two different leather grains in the pack, and a total of six leather textures. As a bonus, I also extracted two textures of the grainy fabric that’s used to line the inside pockets of the billfolds. This makes for 8 textures total.

The leather of both billfolds is worn, as these are the ones we use on a daily basis. The pack works wonders to distress design elements (just paste one of the texture in a layer mask). As a matter of fact, the copy on the hero shot for the product has been weathered using one of them. You could also use the textures as part of the texture build-up for a background.

Dirty plastic noise texture pack

These noisy and dusty textures come from an unlikely place. You know these little plastic pockets in billfolds to hold extra credit and ID cards? Well, now you know.

I’ve had that leather billfold for a while. It’s old, and all worn out. It’s been at the bottom of countless pockets and bags. And it has accumulated a lot of dirt, dust, and other lint particles.

I pulled out these little plastic pockets, cut them down in flat “sheets,” and scanned them at very high resolution (on average 5250×7400 pixels @ 2400 dpi). These textures are the result of that scanning process.

The pack contains 4 variations of each textures:
– Black speckles on black (JPGs)
– Black speckles on transparent background (PNGs)
– White speckles on black (JPGs)
– Transparent speckles on black (PNGs)

Put them on Screen or Multiply, and noise things away. Add a specific colour overlay, and add subtle speckles to your backgrounds. Paste them in your layer masks for subtle weathering.

The textures composing this pack came all from the materials used to protect an old type reference book I bought from eBay.

Because it’s over a century old, the little booklet was tightly packaged in multiple layers of brown paper, cardboard, silk paper, and more.

The texture are 5160×3872 pixels and more at 2400 DPI.
