Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 1: Petal Pushers Flower Shop

To get started let’s open up Photoshop and create a New Document. For the settings go ahead and set it up so that the document is 5”x7” with a resolution of 300 ppi, RGB Color Mode, and set the Background Contents to ‘White’. From there, go ahead and give your document a name – I will be using ‘petal-pushers-flower-shop’ and then when you are finished, click ‘Create’ in the lower right hand corner of the window.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Now that you have created your document you should see a single layer named ‘Background’ with a small lock icon next to it as highlighted below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Double click on the layer and when you are prompted with the ‘New Layer’ dialog box enter a name for the layer – here I will just be calling it ‘BG’ before clicking ‘OK’ to apply the changes and unlock the layer.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

You should now notice that the small lock icon has disappeared and the updated name should also be displayed on the layer. From here, move the ‘Opacity’ slide over to the left until it’s set to ’50%’ or you could simply press the number ‘5’ on the keyboard.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 2: Bent Screens

Next, open the ‘RSCO-Bent-Screen.jpg’ file from the freebies folder for this tutorial.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Click and drag the texture over into your main document. From here, double click on the layer name and change it – in this case I have decided to rename my layer to the file name as shown in the image below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Hold the Control Key and click on the layer to reveal a dropdown menu. From here, we are going to select ‘Convert to Smart Object’ from the list.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Now that we have converted our layer into a Smart Object we will press Command/Ctrl+T to initiate a Free Transform Command so that we can scale this down. Initially you may not see the bounding box around the texture image, so to view the entire area press Command/Ctrl+0 on the keyboard to zoom out and fit the area to your screen. Photoshop will zoom out so that you can now see the full bounding box like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Move your cursor over any of the four corners of the bounding box and drag inwards while holding Alt/Option+Shift on the keyboard. By holding these keys together and dragging inwards you can scale the texture down from the center while retaining the proportions of the image. Make the texture just large enough to fill the entire canvas and you should now have something like the image shown here:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 3: Inverted Textures

Select the Smart Object texture layer and press Command/Ctrl+I on the keyboard to invert the texture. Next, change the Blend Mode of the layer to ‘Screen’ so your texture looks like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

With your inverted texture layer selected, press Command/Ctrl+J four times to create four additional copies of the Smart Object texture layer. Once you have done that, select the original copy just above the ‘BG’ layer and then hold the Shift Key and select the very top copy of your texture layers so that they are all selected at the same time. Next, click on the small folder icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette as indicated by the yellow highlight box in the image below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

You can now give your new Group Folder a name – here I am once again just using the file name for the entire group.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 4: Levels of Levels

Make sure your folder is selected and then hold the Alt/Option key and click on the small Adjustment Layer Icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. You should then see a menu appear where we want to select ‘Levels’ as shown below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Once you have done that you should be prompted with another dialog box. From this box we want to make sure to check off the option that says ‘Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask’ and then hit ‘OK’ to apply the change. This will ensure that the Levels Adjustment will only affect the contents of the folder that the Clipping Mask is attached to.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

We will now move the right slider of the Levels Adjustment towards the center until it’s set to about ’224’ as shown here:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 5: Color Fills

With the Levels Adjustment Layer selected in your Layers Palette, return to the Adjustment Layer icon found at the bottom of your Layers Palette and this time we will choose ‘Solid Color…’ from the menu as shown here:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

You will then be asked to choose the color you would like to use so let’s enter a hexadecimal value of ‘#313131’ which is a dark grey color. Once you have selected this color press ‘OK’ to apply the changes.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

This time we don’t need to apply a Clipping Mask but what we want to do instead is change the Blend Mode of this layer to ‘Multiply’ so that our texture shows through.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 6: Adding More Color

Next we will once again return to the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette and add another ‘Solid Color…’ Adjustment Layer.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

This time for the fill color let’s enter a value of ‘#096154’ and then press ‘OK’ to apply the changes.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

From here, change the Blend Mode of the new Color Fill layer to ‘Color Dodge’ as indicated below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

After changing the Blend Mode, select the very top layer in your Layers Palette (this should be our new Color Fill Adjustment Layer) and then hold the Shift Key and select the ‘BG’ layer at the very bottom. You should now have all of your layers that have been created thus far selected and highlighted at the same time. Once you have all of your layers selected, click on the small folder icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette to place all of these layers into a new Group Folder.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Double click the folder name and change it to ‘BACKGROUND’ so all you are left with is a single Group Folder in the Layers Palette.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Here is how our background looks so far:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 7: Floral Illustration

Open the ‘Flower (3).png’ file from the freebies folder in Photoshop.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Drag the flower illustration into your main document and double click on the layer name to enter a new name – here I will just be using the name of the file as shown below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Hold the Control Key and click on the layer to reveal a dropdown menu. From here, choose ‘Convert to Smart Object’ to convert the layer.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Once you have converted the illustration layer into a Smart Object, press Command/Ctrl+I on the keyboard to invert it and then change the Blend Mode to Screen. You should notice that since the layer was converted to a Smart Object prior to inverting the image, this adjustment should show up as a ‘Smart Filter’ attached to the layer.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Press Command/Ctrl+T on the keyboard to initiate a Free Transform and reduce the size of the layer by holding the Alt/Option+Shift keys and dragging inwards from any of the four corners of the bounding box to constrain the proportions of the layer. What we want to do with this first floral illustration is make it smaller and crop it so only a few leaves are showing in the lower left part of our canvas like the image shown here:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 8: Flower Shop Crop

Select the ‘Flower (3).png’ layer and press Command/Ctrl+J on the keyboard to duplicate it. Move the copy of the layer all the way to the opposite side of the canvas so that only a few of the leaves on are showing. Once you’ve done that, click on the ‘Add Layer Mask’ icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette to apply a mask to the duplicate layer.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Press ‘B’ to switch to the Brush Tool and make sure you have a solid black fill color selected before painting over some of the leaves from about the half way point of the duplicate flower layer down to the bottom leaving only the leaves from the middle up. Your image should look something like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 9: Petal to the Metal

Next, open the ‘Flower (9).png’ file from the freebies folder in Photoshop.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Drag the file into your main document and once again convert the layer to a Smart Object. We will also want to repeat the process of inverting the layer (Command/Ctrl+I) and also changing the Blend Mode to ‘Screen’ like we did with our first floral illustration. From here we will place the layer all the way to the left and crop it in a similar way so that only a few of the leaves are coming in from one side. Once you are happy with the size and placement of the leaves press Command/Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer, and then move the new copy to the opposite side to create a frame of florals on both sides.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 10: Wall Flowers

Next we will open the ‘Flower (10).png’ file from the freebies folder which will be going in the middle of our canvas.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Drag the file into your main document and convert it into a Smart Object like we have done with our previous floral layers. We will then repeat the process of inverting the layer and changing the Blend Mode to ‘Screen’ once again. Scale the layer down using a Free Transform (Command/Ctrl+T) and place the layer in the center of your document. You should now have something like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 11: A Fabulous Folder Full of Flowers

Select the very top flower illustration layer and then hold the Shift Key and select the layer just above your ‘BACKGROUND’ folder. You should now have all five of the floral illustrations selected at the same time. From here, select the folder icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette to place all of these layers into a single Group Folder.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Double click on the name of the folder and rename it ‘FLORAL ILLUSTRATIONS’ or something similar of your choosing.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

After creating the new folder, select it in your Layers Palette and then hold Alt/Option and click the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Here we are going to choose ‘Hue/Saturation…’ from the list.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

When prompted with the ‘New Layer’ dialog box, make sure to check off ‘Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask’ as we want this layer to only affect the contents of our ‘FLORAL ILLUSTRATIONS’ folder. Next, hit ‘OK’ to apply the Adjustment Layer with the Clipping Mask applied to it.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

For the Hue/Saturation settings we first want to make sure that we check off the ‘Colorize’ box before changing the settings to ‘Hue: 164’, ’Saturation: 55’ and ‘Lightness: -56’ as shown below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 12: Retro Paper

Next, open the ‘Retro-Effects-Paper-15.jpg’ file from the freebies folder.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Click and drag the texture into your working document and rename it with the name of the file as shown here:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Hold the Control Key and click on the layer before choosing ‘Convert to Smart Object’ from the dropdown menu.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Next, change the Blend Mode of this layer to ‘Difference’ and your image should now look like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 13: Paper Colors

Select the paper Smart Object layer and then hold the Alt/Option key and click on the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette before once again choosing ‘Hue/Saturation…’ from the menu.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Be sure to check off the ‘Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask’ check box before pressing ‘OK’ to apply the changes.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

For the settings on our new Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer we will set the ‘Hue’ to ‘+137’ the ‘Saturation’ to ‘-7’ and the ‘Lightness’ to a value of ‘-36’ as shown in the image below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

From here, select the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer, hold the Shift Key, and then select the Retro Paper Smart Object layer so they are both selected at the same time. Next, click on the folder icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette to place both of these layers into a new Group Folder named ‘RETRO EFFECTS PAPER 15’ or another name of your choice. Your Layers Palette should now look like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 14: The Swarm

Open the ‘swarm4.png’ file from the freebies folder in Photoshop.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Drag the image into your document and place it at the top of your Layers Palette. Hold the Control Key, click on the layer, and then choose ‘Convert to Smart Object’ to convert the layer. From here, double click on the layer name and replace it with ‘Swarm4’. Next, press Command/Ctrl+T to initiate a Free Transform Command and then rotate the image 90º clockwise by holding the Shift Key, moving your cursor over any of the four corners and then turning the image so that it spans vertically instead of horizontally. Before pressing the ‘Enter’ key to apply the changes, shrink the layer down so that you can see more of the fireflies on the canvas.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Once you are happy with the size and placement of your swarm image, hold the Alt/Option key and click on the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette before choosing ‘Levels…’ from the menu.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Check off the ‘Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask’ option and then click ‘OK’ to apply the changes.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

For the settings, enter a value of ’43’ for the left slider and a value of ’217’ for the slider on the right of the Levels Adjustment Properties as shown here:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 15: Colorful Fireflies

Select the ’Swarm4.png’ Smart Object in your Layers Palette and then click on the Adjustment Layer icon once again. This time we want to apply a ‘Hue/Saturation…’ Adjustment Layer.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

You will notice that once we apply this Adjustment Layer it will automatically have a Clipping Mask applied. This is because we had previously applied a Clipping Mask to the Levels Adjustment Layer and by first clicking on the target layer we added our new Adjustment Layer in between the layer and the Levels Adjustment. Once we have done that however, we can move it above the Levels Adjustment Layer by pressing the Command/Ctrl and right bracket keys together to move the layer up one spot in the Layers Palette. For the settings, check off the ‘Colorize’ box and then apply a ‘Hue’ of ‘139’ a ‘Saturation’ setting of ’72’ and a ‘Lightness’ value of ‘-50’ as indicated below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

After applying the settings from above, select the top Adjustment Layer, hold the Shift Key, and then select the ‘Swarm4’ layer. Once you have the swarm layer and both Adjustment Layers selected, simply press Command/Ctrl+G on the keyboard to place these three layers into a new Group Folder and rename the folder ‘SWARM 4’ as shown below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 16: A Lovely Bouquet

Open the ‘Tulips_2_Bouquet_#2.psb’ file from the freebies folder for this tutorial in Photoshop.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Click and drag the folder into your working document and place it roughly in the middle of the canvas but at the top of the Layers Palette.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Press Command/Ctrl+T to initiate a Free Transform and then hold the Alt/Option+Shift keys and drag outwards from any of the four corners of the bounding box to scale the image up proportionally from the center. From here we will also rotate the image clockwise a bit before pressing ‘OK’ to apply the changes. Use the image below as a guide for the size and positioning of your bouquet.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Click on the small arrow next to the folder name to expand the contents of the group. Notice inside that there is a Color Fill Adjustment Layer that controls the color of the bulbs of the tulips. Double click on the small color swatch thumbnail to bring you to a window where you can change this color.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Once the dialog box appears, let’s change the hex value to ‘#FF0600’ and then press ‘OK’ to apply the changes.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

You should now see that all of the flowers have been changed to a vibrant red color like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

The next thing we want to do is expand the ‘shadows’ folder to reveal the four ‘shadow’ layers inside. Select the top ‘shadow’ layer and press Command/Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer, and then lower the opacity to about ’50%’ as shown below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 17: Adding Some Contrast

Open the ‘TULIPS 2 BOUQUET #2’ Group Folder and then hold the Alt/Option key and click on the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. From the menu that pops up, choose ‘Hue/Saturation…’ from the list.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

When prompted with the ‘New Layer’ dialog box, check off the option that says ‘Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask’ and then hit ‘OK’ to apply the change.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

All we want to do here is move the ‘Saturation’ slider all the way to the left so that it’s set to ‘-100’ and then change the Blend Mode of the layer to ‘Soft Light’ and press the number ‘5’ on the keyboard to reduce the opacity of the layer to ’50%’ in order to create some more contrast in the bouquet.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 18: Adding a Title Treatment

Create a new layer at the top of your Layers Palette and press ’T’ to switch over to your Type Tool. Click on the canvas and type out the word ‘PETAL’ in all caps. For the typeface I am using ‘Avenir’ in the ‘Black’ style and increase the size of the type so it spans across the bouquet (about 115 pt). If you want to see the Character Panel to check your settings you can access it by going to the Window Menu and choosing ‘Character’ from the dropdown menu.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

After placing your first line of text, select the layer and press Command/Ctrl+J to duplicate it. Hold the Shift Key and drag the duplicate layer down below the first line of text. From there, grab your Type Tool (T) and click inside of the word and change it to ‘PUSHERS’ once again in all uppercase. This time you can press Command/Ctrl+T to initiate a Free Transform and then hold the Shift Key and drag inwards from any of the four corners of the bounding box to scale the type down proportionally. Here what we want to do is make the width of our second line match the width of the line above like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Create a copy of your second line of text by selecting the ‘PUSHERS’ layer and pressing Command/Ctrl+J once again. Hold the Shift Key and drag this layer down below the second line of text. For this line we will type out the words ‘FLOWER SHOP’ still using ‘Avenir’ but let’s change the style from ‘Black’ to ‘Roman’. We will also reduce the size to about ’19.85 pt’ and increase the tracking to ‘940’ so we can space the letters out and have this smaller line match the width of the two lines above.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

After placing our three lines of text on top of the bouquet and spacing them out, hold the Shift Key and select the first text layer, and then the third, so that all three of your type layers are selected at the same time. While your three type layers are selected, press Command/Ctrl+G to place them into a new Group Folder and change the name to ‘TT’ for ‘Title Treatment’ to keep things organized. Once you have done that, press the number ‘5’ on the keyboard to reduce the opacity of the entire folder to ’50%’ which will allow us to see the bouquet underneath. This will be an important step for the effect that we want to create so before going ahead make sure you can see through the text. The last thing we will want to do to our folder here is to select the ‘Add Layer Mask’ icon from the bottom of the Layers Palette as shown below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 19: Creating an Illusion

Press ‘B’ on the keyboard to switch to your Brush Tool and make sure that you have a small, hard, round brush selected and that your foreground color is set to solid black.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

The next thing we want to do is make sure that the Layer Mask attached to our ‘TT’ folder is selected. After that, hold the Command/Ctrl Key and click on the layer mask thumbnail of the red Color Fill Adjustment Layer. This will create a selection using the existing mask around all of the red bulbs of the flowers which is going to help us paint out the letters where we want them to appear to go behind the flowers. You should now see the marching ants indicating your active selection around the red bulbs of the tulips.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Use the hard round brush to begin painting over the letters where you want them to be covered by the red bulbs of the flowers. Here I have highlighted a few sections that I want to appear to come in front of the letters. This is why it is so important to be able to see through the text by reducing the opacity of the folder. The trick is to place your text in front of interesting shapes created by the bouquet.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

After working on this a bit more you can also zoom in and paint out areas of the text where you want the green leafy parts of the bouquet to come in front of the letters as well. The goal is to end up with something that looks like this using the mask and the brush:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 20: Creating Shadows

Once you are happy with the illusion of the ‘overlapping’ effect go ahead and expand the ‘TT’ folder to reveal the three text layers inside. Select the top text layer and then add a new layer just above it called ‘LETTER SHADOWS’ as shown below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Switch back to your Brush Tool (B) and this time choose a larger, soft, round brush and lower the opacity to around 10-20% as indicated below:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Inside of the ‘TT’ folder, make sure that you have your ‘LETTER SHADOWS’ layer selected in the Layers Palette. Next, hold the Command/Ctrl+Shift keys and click on the layer thumbnail of each of the three text layers in the folder. Normally we would just hold the Command/Ctrl Key and click on the layer thumbnail to make a selection on a single layer, but by also holding Shift we can add to our existing selection. The goal here is to end up with a selection around all three text layers while your new layer is still selected and highlighted in the Layers Palette.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Now what we want to do is use our soft round brush to paint in some light shadows above our text. By keeping the shadow layer contained inside of the folder, we can make sure that none of the shadows will interfere with the Layer Mask applied to the Group Folder. The trick here is to use broad strokes and make a few passes to gradually build up your shadows to create more depth. After working on this a bit more you should have something like this:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 21: More Retro Grunge

Open the ‘Retro-Effects-Paper-16.jpg’ file from the freebies folder in Photoshop.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Drag the paper texture into your working document and convert the layer into a Smart Object and also change the name of the layer to the name of the file as shown here:

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Select your new Smart Object layer and press Command/Ctrl+I to invert the image.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 22: Leveling Out

Select the ‘Retro-Effects-Paper-16.jpg’ layer and then hold the Alt/Option Key and click on the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. From here we want to select ‘Levels…’ from the menu that appears.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Next we will check off the ‘Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask’ option and then click ‘OK’ to apply the changes.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

You should now have a new Levels Adjustment Layer with a Clipping Mask applied to it so that it will only be affecting the texture layer below. For the settings, enter a value of ‘108’ on the left slider, and a value of ‘211’ for the slider to the right.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 23: Desaturation

Select the ‘Retro-Effects-Paper-16.jpg’ layer again and return to the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom. This time we will choose ‘Black & White…’ from the list.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

The Black & White Adjustment Layer should already have a Clipping Mask applied to it once it’s added in between the paper texture and the Levels Adjustment we created in the previous step.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Step 24: Bringing It All Together

Select the top Adjustment Layer, and then hold the Shift Key and click on the paper texture Smart Object layer so all three of the layers are selected together. From there you can either press Command/Ctrl+G or click on the folder icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette to place these three layers into a new Group Folder.

Petal Pushers Flower Shop

Double click on the folder name in the Layers Palette and then change it to ‘RETRO EFFECTS PAPER 16’ and then change the Blend Mode of the entire folder to ‘Screen’ as shown in the image below:
