The Cartoonist Brushes – Version 1.4

By: Alex Dukal Rating:

This pack was created with the idea of emulating styles used primarily in black and white comic strips, using black ink and washes, but I’ve added some brushes that complement this style very well.

The Cartoonist Brushes

More than two hundred professional brushes & tools for graphic artists, cartoonists, animators and everyone that loves to draw with black inks, watercolor and experimental materials.
The cartoonist brushes set includes everything from classic clear lines to the emulation of vintage line styles (Searle, Provensen, Pratt, DePatie, Breccia, etc.), from the dirtiness of the Dry Point technique to the amazing and never more realistic “ink washing” effect! and more… crosshatching, fountain pens, sumi-e, splatters, texturing, etc.

You’ll find yourself enjoying and making your job more effective with these proven tools.

With the purchase of this pack you will receive all future updates to this set for free.

This set of brushes was created with the idea of emulating some styles used primarily in black and white comic strips, using black ink and washes. As an extra, I’ve added a bunch of brushes that complement very well to this set: The Splatter Brushes and The Cross Hatching Brushes which are two full extra sets provided with The Cartoonist Brushes.

UPDATED TO V1.4 – December, 2016

This is the last update of the year and, again, there are changes to the main file:

Three brushes from the ‘Comics’ section have been moved to the new ‘Fountain Pens’, so keep in mind that the numbering of some brushes have changed.

These new brushes (a total of 22) were specially created by a request from a user who was looking to emulate some traditional fountain pens: liquid black ink but including some subtle wash effect.

I’ve also added some more Ink Washings, a nice blender for washings and a new wash eraser.

Included in this set:

• AD_Cartoonist-Brushes_v1.4.tpl – This is the main file with 117 Tool Presets.
• AD_Fountain-Pens.tpl – The new set with 22 Tool Presets.
• 02_AD-Ninetize-Wash_20px.tpl – This brush only works in newer Photoshop versions.
• AD_Cross-Hatching.tpl – The 40 Cross Hatching brushes.
• AD_Splatters.tpl – The 38 Splatters.
• All the Reference Sheets (PDFs)

All the new brushes were added to the Reference Sheet and there’s a new video to preview these brushes:

To keep things organized the new set is provided separated from the main file, of course if you are interested to keep all the brushes in one file you could load the main set, then the fountain pen brushes and finally save it all together. This video tutorial should help:

Software compatibility: Most of this brushes & presets were created in Photoshop CC 2015 using a Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet.
Tested also in Photoshop CS6 with a Wacom Graphire 4 and a Cintiq Companion Hybrid.

Recommended Setup: Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC to CC 2017 or higher) plus a Wacom tablet.

Minimum Requirements: Photoshop CS5.5 + Wacom tablet, but… with this setup do not expect to use the brushes in the exactly same way I created them. Photoshop CS6 is fine for these brushes.

Take note that the Wacom Graphire and Bamboo models have less pressure levels and the absence of some options (there’s no TILT option for brushes).

Hi there, is it possible to use these in procreate (on ipad) too, anyhow?
thankyou for info on how to, if possible.

      Hey Labinski,

Thanks so much for getting in touch and it is great to hear that you are interested in picking up the Cartoonist Brushes. I am sorry to be the bearer of badnews but unfortunately TPL. Brushes are not compatible with Procreate. My apologies for any inconvenience caused by this Labinski, however I have just popped you an Email that should help.

Hello! I was wondering if you could ask Alex of he could make these packs available also in abs? My current Photoshop won’t let me export tpl’s as brushes. If you have another solution, please tell! Thanks!

      Hey Artie,

I am so sorry that the .TPL files aren’t working for you!

This pack will only work in PS CS6+ as the .TPL files store default presets for the brushes and other tools. If the designer were to provide ABR files, the pack may not work in the same way, which we believe is why the designer hasn’t been able to provide them like this. I’m so sorry for any disappointment caused.
